Creative Wedding Receptions

April 21st, 2009

So many weddings all seem to be the same. The same flowers, music, and food. There is no reason that you have to follow the same formula as everyone else, though. Your wedding reception is a time to have some fun and be creative and expressive.

Do you have a great sense of humor and do you like the idea of letting your guests laugh? You’ll find that hiring a professional comedian or entertainer can go a long way towards getting the laughs flowing. Even if he or she does not perform for the entire reception, you’ll find that having them up for quick spots can go a long way towards getting the energy up. Another stage professional that you may want to hire is a magician, which is popular with guests of all ages.

One great reception idea that has been making the rounds lately is the country reception. Rent a large barn and have a regular country themed party. This can be a great way to let your guests unwind after a formal wedding. Find a band that knows some great country tunes and you’ll soon see your reception getting into the spirit of things. Suggest dressing down to your guests and you’ll find that this can help them get much more comfortable.

Another great way to personalize the wedding is to look at the food. For instance, there’s no reason to stick with the normal chicken, fish or vegetable options, and your guests may welcome something a little more interesting. What about Indian food, or Mexican food? Did you and your sweetie meet at a Vietnamese diner, or do you have fond recollections of a trip to France? The cuisine that you serve at your reception can be as interesting as you like, and it is a great way to make your wedding more unique.

Married at Sea

April 19th, 2009

Choosing the right ship and destination is important for your wedding. When you are choosing a ship or cruise line, check into the marriage services that are provided. Check to make sure they allow on board weddings and find out the prices they charge.

Destination is also important. Remember, you want a destination that you’ll enjoy for your honeymoon, since that is what occurs after your wedding. So, choose a destination you are sure you’ll enjoy.

You can be as formal or as casual as you want when it comes to your attire and jewelry for the cruise ship wedding. If you want the formal dress, you can go with one and all the beautiful accessories that go along with it. However, since you are on board a ship, you may want to go with a dress that is a bit simpler. The huge train may not be the best option. Many brides choose a simple floor length dress and wedding jewelry that is fairly simple as well. After all, the backdrop is amazing on the ship.

When you are planning a cruise ship wedding, more than likely you won’t want to go with a huge guest list. Otherwise the wedding can get very pricey. Just a few friends and family members will be a great choice. Just remember, those you invite along for the wedding are going to be there the entire cruise, so they’ll be with you on your honeymoon too. This is something to keep in mind when making this choice for your wedding.

Indian Wedding Customs

April 17th, 2009

Weddings in India are more than just a celebration; they’re an event that lasts several days. The country is quite vast and each area had different customs that slowly melted together as improved transportation and communication developed. The term for the wedding ceremony “Vivaha”, means taking a girl away and the sacrifice of giving away a daughter is “kanyadana”, although the literal translation means donating a virgin. The ceremony is a huge celebration and families plan for the event long before the couple ever meets, since it can be quite an expensive occasion.

Usually the first ceremony is the Vanna or the formal commitment ceremony announcing the engagement. The elders from both the bride and groom’s side meet in the temple where they exchange flowers to celebrate the couple’s engagement and merging of the families. The bride’s family offers a traditional Kashmiri meal, and var, a rice pudding, is offered throughout the family and neighborhood. The bride’s family then sends dry fruit, cash, and a pot of misri, a pudding made of milk, ghee, sugar, sliced almonds, and cardamom, which is adorned with silver leaf.

Another celebration involving henna is the Mehendi, the henna ceremony. The Mehendi is a method to show transformation and transcendence. Brides traditionally get together with their friends and spend hours putting henna patterns onto their hands, feet, arms, and legs. The bride gets the most intricate patterns and according to custom, she doesn’t have to participate in housework until the henna wears off her body. Today, the groups often embellish the intricate designs of henna with glitter and other shimmering body powder. The night of painting is more than just for creating beautiful works of art, it is also a time that friends offer advice for the marriage bed and other information for an erotic wedding night.

The actual ceremony may take place around a sacred fire. Some tie golden threads around the foreheads of the bride and groom. There is also a tradition of using seven rupee coins as the stepping-stones around the sacred fire. There are a number of different rituals, depending on the location and religion of the couple. One ritual is the carrying of the bride to the alter by her male family members. While all the rituals vary, there are many parties and changes of clothing for the bride and groom following the wedding. The bride is always treated as a princess. Elaborate decorations to the wedding bed may be another tradition, depending on the couple’s beliefs.

Wedding Vow Inspirations

April 16th, 2009

Weddings are as varied as the couples that participate and that includes the vows that the bride and groom say at the ceremony. While many still use the traditional vows, most churches allow couples to write their own. If you and your intended spouse decide you want your vows more personalized, check with your church clergy before you begin the process, just to make sure that your church allows it.

Your wedding vows should come from your heart and be honest, but also should be appropriate for the occasion. No matter how impressive an appetite your petite bride has, no one wants to hear that she can eat like a lumberjack. Take the time to answer a few questions and work from those answers:

Where did you first meet?

Was it love at first sight or friendship that caught fire?

When did you realize that this person was your soul mate and you wanted to spend the rest of your life together?

Think of one outstanding moment in your time together. Was it a quiet time, one of laughter, one where they stood by your side in the face of adversity, or simply a moment when you realized their kindness and loving qualities?

What negative qualities do you possess that your spouse accepts?

How does your intended make you a better person?

Look for what you bring to the marriage. Do you promise to willingly share the workload so you both can enjoy your life together? Will you bring patience, honesty, trust, faithfulness, compassion or kindness? If you and your intended share differing views, do you embrace the differences and accept them thoroughly?

Write the answers down to the questions. Don’t worry about your writing style; after all, you’re the only one that reads the information. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar at this point. If writing isn’t your forte, try using a tape recorder. Carry one with you and when a good idea hits, tape it. Later you can go back through the tape and glean the best ideas for vows that will not leave a dry eye in the church.

Ski Resort Weddings

April 14th, 2009

If you love skiing or the great outdoors, there’s nothing more beautiful that saying “I do” on a ski slope. Those that love skiing can use the slope for their nuptials in the winter and those that just want the drama and beauty of Mother Nature find that summer on the slopes provide a magnificent backdrop. Each season provides a different look to the countryside and offers different opportunities for a memorable wedding.

The winter wedding atop the slopes or at the ski lodge is a way for a couple to combine their love with the love of the slopes. If the family of the bride and groom are avid skiers then it gives them one last opportunity to share this time together before Daddy loses his daughter and gains a son-in-law. Many of the winter ski destination weddings are in the hotel rather than outside. Often the majesty of the mountain is the backdrop for the ceremony when a room surrounded with windows gives a diorama view of the outside.

Even the smaller ski areas often rent rustic lodges for wedding ceremonies, offering the bride and groom a chance to be married by the warm cozy fireplace. Destinations like beautiful Lake Tahoe also provide other forms of entertainment for those not quite as athletic. If you’re on the slopes, a warm ski outfit with the perfect jewelry for the bride make a stunning outfit. Inside by the fire, a casual relaxed outfit is best. Take along the clothes that you’d pack for any ski trip.

These same winter venues become a paradise in the summer. Wild flowers cover many of the slopes and the hot sun is suddenly bearable at the high elevation. A gondola offers a unique method of transportation for the wedding guests and wedding party. A ski resort can be a beautiful place to hold your wedding, whether you love the natural beauty of snow or sunshine.
