Choosing the Perfect Wedding Date

March 31st, 2009

When you are going to get married, you’ll find that one of the first choices that you have to make is going to be on the wedding date. Before any other wedding preparations can roll forward, you are going to need to think about when the big day is going to be. Before you pick, though, it is very important to keep a few things in mind. Consider some of the following factors and think hard about them before you move forward.

First, what kind of wedding do you want? For instance, if you want an outdoor wedding, remember that choosing a wedding during fall, when the weather is apt to change at a moment’s notice is risky. Similarly, if you want a beach wedding, try to avoid the monsoon season!

Another thing that you are going to need to think about is the holidays. There are couples who manage to pull off getting married around the holidays, but keep in mind that they are dealing with a number of different stresses on top of things. The bigger the holiday is, the more you can expect your guest list to be pared down.

When you are thinking about holding a wedding on a holiday that happens to be religious, remember that you are going to need to to think about what venues are going to be open. For the most part, you can forget about having a big church wedding on Christmas or Easter, or any of the days around it.

Don’t forget that more than just holidays can keep people homebound. If you decide to have your wedding happening on the Superbowl, you can expect at least some whining from your guests. Similarly, if you set your wedding before taxes are due, you can expect to have a smaller guest list as well.

Stylish Centerpieces for Informal Weddings

March 30th, 2009

When you are planning an informal wedding, you’ll find that there is no reason to skip out on the decorative aspects that make a wedding so memorable. Centerpieces are one thing that give your wedding some life and some color, and you can bet that no matter how formal or informal your wedding is, you will still have lots of choices that your guests will love. Just take some time to consider what your choices are and what suits you.

One great centerpiece that isn’t going to cost you an arm and a leg is a candle centerpiece. You can get candles relatively inexpensively, and you’ll also find that you can get them in shades that will match your wedding colors quite well. The romantic glow of candles will add a beautiful ambiance to your wedding.

In terms of the design, you can do any number of things with candles. Perhaps you’d like to have a few candles of various lengths in the middle of the table, or maybe you’d prefer to have a lovely clear bowl of water on which you can float some candles. Either way, you’ll have a tasteful and gorgeous centerpiece.

Another great way to decorate your tables for an informal wedding is to look around for small potted plants. Even potted plants that that are flowering will not cost you too much from your local nursery, and you’ll find that they add a lovely splash of color to the table itself.

You can even encourage your guests to take the plants home with them. If you know that there are a number of green thumbs in your wedding guest list, this is a great touch. It is also a great eco-friendly choice that you can make for your wedding.

Wedding Food for Cold Weather

March 27th, 2009

If you have planned your special day for the winter months, you have a unique opportunity to provide a warm and hearty menu for your guests. The chilly months invite comfort foods and steaming beverages. When planning your wedding menu, you and your caterer can work together to create a memorable meal that will bring your family and friends together and is sure to please. Here are some ideas that you might want to consider for your reception.

Instead of the light salads and cucumber sandwiches frequently served at summer weddings, serve warm soups with the other hors d’oeuvres. Soups that will make an impression as a winter soup are pumpkin, squash, split pea, potato, or even a seafood bisque or gumbo. Any of these soups will be a winter winner, as guest warm their chilly bones and start to warm up to the reception.

While being served the soup, you want them to have warming drinks as well. While you can still have the bowl of traditional wedding punch, also offer warm fare. You can have eggnog, with a rich, warm flavor - and eggnog works well if you are serving alcohol at your reception. Spiced wine is another great option, with the brandy taking the chill out and getting your guests relaxed and merry.

For the children who are attending, or those who want something less risky, make sure that you have hot chocolate handy. Hot chocolate can be in a drink dispenser, since it is messy if kids (or grownups) are trying to mix it themselves. It is a nostalgic treat that will add a warmth to your wedding reception.

Winter Honeymoon Ideas

March 23rd, 2009

Not every wedding takes place in June. Nor does a honeymoon have to mean a beach vacation. For couples who are planning winter weddings, there are plenty of great cold weather destinations.

If you want a different wedding destination or honeymoon for the winter, try a night at the famous Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden. Each year as the river Tome freezes and makes the building material available, they build a new Icehotel. It has 80 rooms made of ice with ice sculptures throughout. There are suites, but better than that, an ice wedding chapel that looks like something from a storybook.

Builders from all over the world handcraft the Icehotel each year. Beautifully sculpted round beds of ice are fitted with volumes of heavy reindeer pelts and sleeping bags. There are doors for honeymooners made of reindeer pelts and a beautiful chapel made entirely of ice. There are other accommodations available for those that want a back up plan.

Imagine cuddling close in the fairyland of ice and watching the Northern lights dance in the sky. There’s something magical and romantic, which is why the Icehotel is so popular for weddings and honeymoons. It’s a rare getaway that, while may be cold, leaves you with a warm glow.

Something a little less exotic and closer to home is a ski wedding and honeymoon. Probably the best known is at Lake Tahoe. Each of the casinos offer not just transportation to the slopes but a beautiful area for the couple to say “I do”. Spend the day after the wedding maneuvering the slopes and afterward opt for a gourmet dinner and show at any one of the many hotel/casinos. If you feel lucky, and most newlyweds do, put a few dollars in the slot machines. Be aware, most of the machines no longer accept coins, just bills. You’ll probably already have plans for later in the evening.

Wedding Rentals Checklist

March 21st, 2009

If you plan a wedding or a reception at a venue not normally used for that purpose, you may find that you need to rent a lot of different items. You might feel secure because you are holding the wedding at your home and all you need is a few extra chairs and tables. Even though you think that your home is equipped with everything, be aware that you probably have need for more than just those items.

Do you need a runner for the wedding? You can choose to walk down an aisle with no runner but the addition is a great touch, especially if it’s a red carpet. You might also want to rent arches for your wedding as a great touch. Another item to make a backyard wedding look magnificent is a garden fountain. These few touches can turn any backyard into a paradise.

Don’t forget the groom’s tuxedo on that rental list. The best men and groom all need to reserve their tuxes for the wedding well ahead of time.

If you’re going to add more pizzazz to the area, do you want columns for your venue? Don’t forget a special cake stand for the wedding and flower stands for the wedding and reception.

Outdoor wedding receptions require extra lighting, if the event goes into the evening. They require one more, quite essential rental: portable outdoor toilets. Depending how large the crowd, you probably should have more than one. Having a wedding or reception at a non-traditional location can be quite a hassle, but once you get organized, it’s well worth the trouble.

Using Strawberries in Your Wedding

March 19th, 2009

Whether you are having a summer wedding with lots of beautiful ripe strawberries at your disposal, or you are having a winter wedding and feel like brightening it up with some color, you will find that one of the most interesting things that you can use when in terms of food and catering is to include strawberries.

Strawberries are beautiful little fruits, and you will find that just having them at at the table can brighten things up. You will find that it is the rare guest who can resist the delicious sweetness of a good strawberry, and no matter where you want to put them, you can bet that they will be a winner.

You can use strawberries in so many ways. Offer them as part of the cheese platter during the cocktail hour. Or have fresh strawberries sliced into a spinach salad for an unexpected and delicious dish. Chocolate covered strawberries can be placed in little boxes and given out as the wedding favors.

If you have a hankering for strawberry in your wedding cake, you will find that there are plenty of ways that you can ask your baker to incorporate it. Take some time and make sure that you make your needs clear. You may want small pieces in the batter itself, or you may prefer strawberries to be used to decorate the exterior of the cake. If you want to go for something extra rich, think about how decadent a strawberry cheesecake wedding cake would be!

Tips for Guests of Destination Weddings

March 17th, 2009

If you have been invited to a destination wedding, your first thought is probably glee at getting an excuse to travel to an exotic locale, but the second thought might be a little bit of concern. Going to a destination wedding is certainly different from driving even a few hours to go to a wedding, and you will find that a little bit of forethought and information can make your role and your trip a lot easier.

You will also find that the more you do your research before you head out, the better. If they are having their destination wedding in the Virgin Islands, for example, what do you know about the climate or what is appropriate to wear there? The bride can always give you some ideas about what type of clothing and jewelry will fit the style of her wedding.

Also keep in mind that the earlier you make your preparations, the better. If you call as soon as you get the invitation, you are practically assured of a place in the hotel where the festivities are going on. This really beats leaving it until the last minute and having to scramble for accommodations!

When you are invited to a destination wedding, you will find that there are plenty of things to keep in mind, but just remember to have a good time and show the bride and groom how important their happiness is to you!

Bridesmaid Dresses They Will Love

March 15th, 2009

Everyone expects the bride to be beautiful and for many guests the highlight of the wedding is seeing the stunning bridal gown she is wearing. When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, it’s understandable to note that there is often a lot less enthusiasm, there are some that even make the bridesmaids cringe.

However, you can find beautiful bridesmaids’ dresses that they will be thrilled to wear. There are some new concepts and styles to choose from, and your friends will have real smiles on their faces as they pose in some of the prettiest bridesmaids’ dresses ever.

In some cases the styles might be the same but each person can select a color that is suited for them and is complementary to the wedding party colors. Some bridesmaids’ dresses are available with different detail options. The basic styles of the dresses are the same, but the bridesmaids can personalize their dress by adding or deleting longer sleeves, sashes, or bows. There are even some dresses that let the bridesmaids view different choices for the collars and backs of the gown. These are some slight but powerful changes that let the bridal party have their moment to shine also.

A-line dresses are popular because they flatter almost any body shape. A pretty bridesmaid dress today is also seen in a two toned dress that has a full skirt and separate halter style top. Some of the color choices are black skirts and white, pink, or royal blue tops. Even solid color knee length skirts and pretty tops in a print or pattern can wow your friends and the guests. Sashes with roses, ribbons, or bows can be used in contrasting colors to add a unique dress touch.

When choosing your bridesmaid dresses, keep a few things in mind. As honored as your bridesmaids are to be in your wedding, it really isn’t fair to dress them in something that they will not look good in or in something that they do not like.
